Last Updated on January 9, 2026

Are you planning to include Sidemen in your Bali itinerary and wondering which experiences you absolutely can’t miss? Attending a silver class might be one of the answers.

Sidemen is one of those corners of Bali that is still miraculously untouched by mass tourism and modernity. Local life here still revolves around agriculture, farming, and traditional crafts that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Silversmithing is one of them. Attending a silver class in Sidemen is one of the best ways to connect with the local community for a couple of hours in a fun and lighthearted way (also considering that working with silver is not the easiest thing).

In this article, I’ll share everything about my silver class in Sidemen: what you can expect, whether it’s worth it, and how you can book the same experience.

Why Joining a Silver Class in Sidemen Is Absolutely Worth It

Bali is not all about its surreal, abundant nature. I do believe a trip to Bali isn’t complete without connecting with the local culture. The traditions, beliefs, and way of life of Balinese people are an integral part of the experience and can inspire while teaching us something new.

This is why experiences like cooking classes, crafting the colourful canang sari offerings, or attending a silver workshop can truly enrich your itinerary. They give you the chance to observe, ask questions, understand, and take home a little piece of knowledge to incorporate into your own life.

Silversmithing, in particular, is not only about adornment but also embodies Bali’s heritage and spiritual beliefs through the intricate designs carved in silver.

Silver was historically revered for its purity and spiritual significance and became a symbol of prosperity and protection, used in religious ceremonies, weddings, and rituals.

For Balinese artisans, creating silver jewelry is therefore more than a craft; it is a spiritual practice to honor ancestors, seek blessings, and cherish their cultural identity.

As a visitor, participating in this art and, more importantly, supporting a meaningful local activity, is a beautiful way to travel and give back to an island that gives so much every time we visit.

Sidemen Silver: The Best Silver Class in Sidemen

Whenever I book a tour, experience, or class, I make sure it’s as authentic as possible, while also supporting real local businesses.

That’s why I chose Sidemen Silver. This workshop is a true hidden gem where you get to experience silversmithing in a way that few travelers do.

Their laboratory is tucked away among jungle trees, down a bumpy, not-so-well-paved road near the Sidemen Yellow Bridge. The sound of the river flowing just below the bridge, combined with the thriving nature all around, makes for the perfect setting for a slow, creative, and fun experience.

Sidemen Silver is a small family-run business led by Made and his family. Made learned the art of silversmithing from his father and now shares his knowledge with travelers eager to learn.

The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming from the very beginning: from choosing your design to the challenging process of shaping the silver. The team is playful and encouraging, cheering you on and sharing laughs throughout the process (because working with silver is definitely harder than it looks).

There were a few other travelers with me, couples, solo travelers, and friends, all creating their own jewelry. Each group was guided by a team member, and it truly felt like we were sharing an unforgettable experience in a one-of-a-kind setting.

Silver Class in Sidemen: What to Expect

The silver class with Sidemen Silver lasts around two hours, depending on the intricacy of the design you choose.

You book your class for a specific time, and once you arrive, the first step is choosing your design from a huge variety (as a Libra, it took me forever to decide!).

You can choose between a ring or a pendant, and your booking includes 7 grams of silver and copper (used to strengthen the silver) to create your piece. Once your design is finalized, you start working and shaping the silver.

The process involves a series of steps: melting the silver, hammering and shaping it with pliers, using a curious tool that transforms the metal into a thin segment from which the ring will be formed, smoothing the silver, and finally polishing it.

Working with silver is definitely not for the faint-hearted. I was in Sidemen during the rainy season, the most humid time of year in Bali, and combined with the heat from the tools and my inappropriate choice of clothing…I don’t think I’ve ever suffered heat that much (learn from me and dress appropriately!).

The atmosphere, however, was fun and lighthearted. I thought I was strong, but working with silver made me rethink that.

I was constantly cheered on, and one team member even turned on a fan for me when I was struggling with the heat. I will always recall the workshop as two hours of laughter, connection with both the staff and other travelers, and a shared experience of learning and creating with silver.

Things to Know About Attending a Silver Class in Sidemen and How to Book

Whenever I’m looking for the most authentic experiences that support real local businesses, I turn to Seek Sophie. This is exactly the workshop I booked. After booking my Mount Batur Sunrise Hike with them, I am confident they can deliver some of the best experiences while traveling in Asia.

Here are a few things to know when booking your Silver class in Sidemen:

  • Duration: The workshop lasts around two hours, depending on the design you choose.
  • Grams of Silver: Your booking includes 7 grams of silver. If you want to make a larger piece, you can add more silver at IDR 50,000 per gram (around $3).
  • Price: The two-hour workshop costs around $25, which is in line with similar classes in Bali.
  • Location: Sidemen Silver is located right next to the Sidemen Yellow Bridge. Since the bridge isn’t officially open to scooters, you’ll likely arrive via a village-side secondary road that isn’t well-paved, but don’t worry, you’ll get there! Here’s the exact location.
  • What to Wear: Dress as lightly as possible. Working with silver involves fire, and Bali is already hot and humid, so you can imagine how warm it gets during the workshop.
  • Skill Level: The workshop is designed for beginners, so no prior experience or skills are needed.
  • Where to Book: You can book the same workshop with Sidemen Silver HERE. Once your booking is completed, you will receive an email with all the instructions, including the location.

Other Cultural Experiences You Should Try in Sidemen

Sidemen is the perfect place to try activities that allow you to experience local life and learn about the traditions, lifestyle, and beliefs of the Balinese people.

Everything here feels slower and more peaceful compared to areas like Ubud, and locals also seem far less accustomed to mass tourism. Here are two activities you can plan for your time in Sidemen

  • Secret Sidemen: Bali’s Soulful Rice Terraces & Village Rhythms: In Sidemen, you can explore the rice terraces on your own and even discover some hidden ones if you have time to wander around. However, visiting the rice fields with a local guide is on an entirely different level. You’ll get the chance to learn more about the “art” of harvesting rice directly from your guide and local farmers, who are often more open to sharing stories about their daily life when you’re accompanied by a local.
  • Balinese Vegan Cooking | Gorgeous Sidemen Garden: I absolutely love attending cooking classes, and Sidemen is the perfect setting to roll up your sleeves and learn more about traditional, old-generation recipes and the stories behind the delicious Indonesian dishes you’ll try during your trip. Vegan cuisine is a must in Bali (often more affordable and still incredibly nutritious), and that’s exactly what you’ll discover during this workshop before enjoying the results of your culinary efforts.

And that’s my experience with Sidemen Silver and their fun silver workshop. Attending a silver class is perfect whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with a group of friends. It’s genuinely so much fun, and you’ll leave with a unique souvenir that will always remind you of your trip to Bali.
